“Hey Cortana” – The Future is Now!

August 28, 2017 The TNS Group

“Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, You’re my only hope”. Everyone remembers that scene as one of the pinnacles of the Star Wars movie franchise. Princess Leia sends a distress hologram asking for help from Obi-Wan Kenobi as her ship had fallen under attack and her mission was failing. I’m sure as you watched the movie you thought to yourself, “how cool would it be to be able to send holograms to people.”

As time passes we all have ideas of what future technology will be like. It is because of this imaginative thinking that we have advanced as far as we have. Movies like Back to the future imagined automatic lacing shoes and in 2016 Nike with Michael J Fox held a contest to raise money for Parkinson that raffled off those infamous self-lacing shoes. Similarly, in movies like the 1990 Total Recall, autonomous cars were a fabled piece of future tech that are now storming the market. With innovators like Nike, Tesla, and Apple at the forefront of integrating technology into every aspect, it’s hard not to wonder what will come next.

Taking a page from Star Wars, holograms may soon be integrated into all the technology we use.  In May of this year a youtube video from Jarem Archer, a software developer in West Palm Beach, FL hit the web showcasing a working concept appliance that gives holographic abilities to Microsoft’s virtual assistant, known as Cortana. Though it is still in its developing stages, the device combines the holographic sidekick from the Halo franchise with the computing abilities of Cortana to deliver an even more interactive experience than the one seen in the Star Wars Movies.

What Does This Mean for Technology?

This opens a lot of doors for VR,  AI and other sorts of smart technology taking the world by storm. Given the success of this concept, the idea of having a holographic assistant integrated into all of your technology is a huge possibility. Pretty soon we’ll be living just like Kevin Kilner’s family in Disney’s 1999 “Smart House”.  Just cross your fingers it doesn’t take the path of the film where the technology gained sentience and took over.

While this is just the beginning for technology such as this, it certainly is exciting to see the direction of technology embarking on a new path, and we at the TNS Group will continue to keep our eyes peeled for other innovations in tech.
