Ergonomics 101: Posture in the Workplace

“What do you mean, I’m not being productive? I’ve been at my desk working all day and haven’t moved!”
Sound familiar? Well THAT my friend is the exact problem. Sitting all day and not moving is the worst thing you can do for your productivity, not to mention your health. Too much computer time causes strain on the eyes, decreases blood flow, and contributes to decreased creativity and productivity.

There’s something called a 20-20-20 rule that can help. Every 20 minutes or so, take 20 seconds to look at something 20 feet away. Whenever possible make time to take a break and move around. Take a short walk around the building, or instead of sending an IM question to your co-workers get up and walk to the other end of the office to stretch your legs. Little trips throughout the day will improve your health and concentration. Taking breaks allows you to not only rest your eyes and gets you moving, but also allows you to step back, clear your mind and get a fresher perspective on the project at hand.

Being comfortable and having your workstation set up properly are very important. Do you ever find yourself slouching at your desk? Or your back starts hurting? Maybe your wrists start hurting too? That is where the need for proper ergonomics comes in. You can make some quick and easy changes to alleviate some of those pains.

Check your Posture

Make sure you sit upright with your hands, wrists, and forearms straight and parallel to the floor.

Check your Chair

Make sure you it’s adjustable and has good lumbar support.

Monitor Height and Distance 

Monitors should be at eye level. You shouldn’t need to turn or lift your neck at all. If needed, get a document holder that can be in line with the height of your monitor.

Footrest and/or Headrest

If you’re short like me, you may need a footrest under your desk so your knees are at a 90 degree angle.

You are just a few steps away from achieving full ergonomic bliss. There are many websites dedicated to ergonomics in the office specifically. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has their own ergonomic standards to follow as well. It won’t take long, and it will change your life.
